Universities and institutions of higher education

If you are employed with a university or an institution of higher education, e.g. academies of music and schools of visual arts, a significant part of your salary and your terms of employment are laid down in the job structure. Your salary is made up of basic salary, pension contribution and a fixed allowance.

A) MA/Cand.mag., MSc/cand.scient., MA/mag.art., MSC/mag.scient., MA(LSP)/cand.ling.merc. et al. B) MA/Cand. phil., MA(LSP)/cand. interpret. C) Bachelors (BA and BSc) are paid according to pay scale points 1-5.
The pay scale placement depends on the qualification (either pay development A , B or C). Advancement occurs once yearly until the final pay scale point has been reached. On first appointment, you are placed according to your accrued seniority according to the provisions set out in the collective agreement. Thus, if you have accrued 18 months’ employment which accrue seniority, an MA/cand.mag. will be placed on pay scale point 4 with advancement to pay scale point 5 after six months.
Public sector salary is agreed as net salary. This means that the 17.1 percent pension contribution is paid in addition to the net salary. The total pension contribution is paid by the employer and pension contributions are therefore not subtracted from your salary.

Assistant professor

The assistant professorship is a postgraduate position where the main tasks comprise research (including a commitment to publish/scientific dissemination) and research-based teaching (and the associated obligations relating to exams). The position may also include sharing knowledge with society and, to a limited extent, carrying out other tasks.

The predominance of the various tasks may vary over time; however, a balance should be ensured allowing the assistant professor to qualify within the areas relevant to the position (typically research and teaching). Supervision is provided as well as the option of enhancing your teaching skills with a view to preparing a written assessment of the teaching skills of the assistant professor.

The appointment as assistant professor may be of limited tenure or tenured, meaning that the assistant professor transfers to an associate professorship after a positive assessment. The starting point is that the position is full-time; however, part-time positions also exist. An appointment as assistant professor requires PhD-level qualifications.

Dean

The dean is employed either in a position governed by collective bargaining or on a civil-servant limited-tenure basis.

A centrally agreed basic salary has been set for the dean, the basic salary of which (as at 31 March 2012) amounts to a total of DKK 583,200. In connection with the appointment of a dean, a local allowance must be negotiated in accordance with a central agreement.

External lecturer

This position is a part-time position. The responsibilities of external lecturers mainly consist of giving lectures and other independent high-level teaching, preparing and assessing assignments in connection with the teaching and in connection with written exams as well as examining at examinations and other tests. The qualification calls for a degree at master’s level as well as other high-level qualifications, and the appointment requires that the person – at a professional assessment in accordance with applicable rules – is declared qualified.

An external lecturer may be appointed on a tenured or of limited tenure. Limited-tenure appointments are usually made for three-year periods. 

As at 1 May 2012, it became possible to agree on permanent and temporary allowances for external lecturers. These allowances may be agreed at appointment as well as in the course of the appointment, at least every third year. 

The actual number of hours and exam participation, etc, are agreed on a semester basis within the agreed limits; however, at a maximum of 780 yearly working hours. 2.5 hours’ preparation are provided per lesson taught.

Researcher

The appointment as researcher is a postgraduate position where the main tasks comprise research (including a commitment to publish/scientific dissemination) and research-based public-sector consultancy. Additionally, it involves a certain amount of teaching and a limited number of other tasks. The predominance of the various tasks may vary over time; however, a balance should be ensured allowing the researcher to qualify within the areas relevant to the position (typically research, research-based public-sector consultancy and teaching). Supervision is provided as well as the option of enhancing your teaching skills with a view to preparing a written assessment of the teaching skills of the researcher. The appointment as researcher may be of limited tenure or tenured, meaning that the researcher transfers to a senior researcher position after a positive assessment. The starting point is that the position is full-time; however, part-time positions also exist. An appointment as researcher requires PhD-level qualifications.

Head of department

The head of department is generally employed in a limited-tenure position governed by collective bargaining.

A centrally agreed basic salary has been set for the head of department, the basic salary of which (as at 31 March 2012) amounts to a total of DKK 484,944. In connection with the appointment of a head of department, a local allowance must be negotiated in accordance with a central agreement.

Associate professor

The associate professorship is usually a permanent comprising obligations to teach and carry out research. The position may be of a limited tenure if the main tasks comprise research and development. The main tasks comprise research (including a commitment to publish/scientific dissemination) and research-based teaching (and the associated obligations relating to exams). The position may also include sharing knowledge with society – including participating in the public debate. Additionally, it may involve research management, guidance and supervision of assistant professors and researchers as well as carrying out professional assessments.
Generally, the position is full-time; however, part-time positions exist.

PhD fellowships

Postdoc 

The postdoc position is of limited tenure and will mainly comprise research. In addition to this, it will involve a number of certain other tasks. The predominance of the various tasks may vary over time.

The postdoc position is not a postgraduate position and does not comprise any enhancement of teaching skills. For this reason, postdoc positions do not qualify for appointment as associate professor/senior researcher.

A postdoc appointment is made for a maximum period of up to four years at any one university. The position is basically a full-time position; however, part-time positions also exist.

A postdoc appointment requires PhD-level qualifications.

Professor 

The professorship is a position where the main tasks comprise research (including a commitment to publish/scientific dissemination) and research-based teaching (and the associated obligations relating to exams). The position may also include public-sector consultancy and sharing knowledge with society – including participating in the public debate as well as research management, guidance and supervision of assistant professors and researchers as well as carrying out professional assessments.
The appointment as professor is usually tenured but may also be of limited tenure. The position is usually on the provisions of the collective agreement equivalent to the appointment of civil servants at pay grade 37 (or possibly pay grade 38). In addition, an individual allowance may be negotiated.

Professor with special assignments

Professor with special assignments (WSA) is a position without tenure the purpose of which is hiring particularly talented researchers to develop a particular field of research or education in promising areas at international level. The position must be within one of the university's core areas, a focus area or an area with special need for high professional competence, as part of formation of a new field of research or education.

The prominence of the various tasks may vary for individuals over time; however, emphasis must be placed on the development of the professional area.

The employment may be of limited tenure of between three and eight years. The professor subsequently is employed as an associate professor.

An appointment as a professor WSA requires qualifications that correspond to the requirements of ordinary professorial positions.

The appointment is made in the new payroll system with a local negotiation of a pensionable allowance. The allowance is agreed locally. If not agreement can be reached, the allowance constitutes the minimum allowance.

Rector

Rectors are appointed on either a collective agreement basis or in a civil servant position without tenue.

There are no centrally agreed allowances in relation to the position of rector which means that a rector’s salary is negotiated on an individual basis.

Senior researcher

The position of senior researcher is usually a tenured position with an obligation and a right to teach and carry out research. The appointment may be without tenure if the main area of responsibility of the position is research and development.

The main tasks comprise research (including a commitment to publish/scientific dissemination) and research-based public-sector consultancy. Add to this a certain amount of teaching as well as research management, guidance and supervision of assistant professors and researchers as well as carrying out professional assessments.

The position is usually a full-time appointment; however, part-time appointments exist.

Senior consultant

Senior consultant is a position where the main tasks are research-based public-sector consultancy and the dissemination of research results to the public sector, the business sector and society in general. In addition, there is an obligation to keeping abreast in a wide area of science and carry out analyses of professionally wide problems and communicating these in a scientifically sound manner. The position may also include teaching and research.

The predominance of the various tasks may vary over time.

An appointment as senior consultant requires qualifications equivalent to the satisfactory completion of a period of employment as assistant professor/researcher, but requirements may also be met in an alternative manner.

A position as senior consultant is usually a permanent position; however, an appointment may also be limited in time.

Student assistant/-lecturer

At certain institutions/studies, positions of assistant/associate professor may be filled by full-time teachers. Such positions are found at: 

    • business-language studies at Copenhagen Business School, Aarhus University, University of Southern Denmark as well as at Aalborg University,
    • economics studies at the commercial studies at Aarhus University
    • Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports at University of Copenhagen
    • Department of Sports Science and Clinical Biomechanics at University of Southern Denmark
    • The BA in Sports Sciences at Aarhus University and the university access courses at Aalborg University to  technical-natural sciences courses at Aalborg University and DTU/Technical University of Denmark
    • Studies with courses in which the teaching is of either a creative, practical or artistic nature, is non-qualifying support education or relates to propaedeutics at the humanities and theological faculties.

The areas of responsibility include teaching and similar tasks. The position may include professional development tasks. The qualification required is a master’s level. The positions are usually time-limited full-time appointments.

Appointment is made on the terms of assistant professor or associate professor, depending on the qualifications of the individual. On appointment as student assistant, the institution must ensure that the appointee is provided with teaching supervision and guidance. This is handled on associate professor or professor level and the institution shall determine the specific contents and scope. No later than six months prior to the expiry of the sixth year of appointment, a written assessment shall be prepared of the teaching qualification of the assistant professor. If this is positive, the position of associate professor is granted. The appointment as associate professor will include supervision.

Teaching assistant

This is a part-time position with a view to independently undertaking teaching of usually a basic nature or teaching which supplements teaching undertaken by assistant, associate or professors.

These appointments are usually made for periods of up to three years. Reappointment may be made to the extent that this complies with the Danish Act on fixed-term employment.

The actual number of hours, etc., is determined on a semester basis; however, with a maximum of 780 annual working hours.

Each hour of teaching qualifies for 1 1/2 hours’ preparation. Hours spent of examinations are deemed to be working hours. Each hour of spoken examination qualifies for one hour’s preparation. Payment is always made for a minimum of one hour of examination.

Scientific assistant
